Projekt AQUATAB vznikl již v polovině 90. let 20. století, kdy byl původně zamýšlen jako databázový přehled akvarijních ryb s informacemi o jejich chovu a odchovu. Od roku 2001 je dostupný veřejně na internetu a postupně se stal nejucelenějším českým zdrojem informací o systematice rybovitých obratlovců. V průběhu času také navázal na České názvosloví ryb a rybovitých obratlovců vydané Národním muzeem v Praze (Hanel & Novák 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009; Hanel, Plíštil & Novák 2011, 2013) a pokračuje v dokumentaci a aktualizaci taxonomických informací včetně tvorby českého názvosloví pro taxony, u nichž dosud nebylo vytvořeno.
